Day 8 – Newry Beach, Holyhead Harbour
9th November We left our campsite this morning and made our way to Newry Beach, tucked inside Holyhead Harbour, ready for our very first shore dive of The Great Scuba Drive. The rain was hammering down, bouncing off the road as we drove, one of those typical UK journeys where even the windscreen wipers can’t quite keep up. Despite the weather, we were excited to reach the site and get into the water. It was a real treat to meet up with our friend and colleague Mia, who kindly

Day 7 – Defizz Day
Today we made our way to Wales, where we’ll be based for the next week. We had decided that this was to be a defizz day, plus a chance to catch our breath, and tackle the ever growing list of admin tasks that have been chasing us since Cornwall. Between editing photos, writing up notes, replying to messages, and organising the week ahead, the day quickly filled up. We’re so grateful for all the people who have reached out with ideas, invitations, and encouragement, and we wan

Day 6 – Dosthill Quarry, Tamworth
7th November Our dive site today was Dosthill Quarry, which didn’t open until 1 p.m. on the day that we visited, so we spent the morning catching up on admin, editing photos, writing notes, booking ahead, and planning the next stages of our adventure. It felt good to slow down for a few hours before getting back on the road for the short drive to Tamworth. As we followed the sat nav, things started to look a little strange, instead of a quarry, we seemed to be driving through

Day 5 – Stoney Cove, Leicester
6th November After saying goodbye to our Scuba Blue friends the previous afternoon, we made our way to Leicestershire. The journey should have taken less than three hours, but the universe clearly had other plans. Before long, we found ourselves pulled over on the hard shoulder with Rico performing some impromptu motorway mechanics while lorries thundered past. The car’s “check engine” light had flashed on, and closer inspection revealed that the air intake hose had come loos

Day 4 – Vobster Quay, Somerset
5th November After a slightly frustrating evening battling dodgy Wi-Fi connections, we were up bright and early, excited about the day ahead. Today was all about catching up with our friends from Scuba Blue, the fabulous dive training group from Taunton. We know them well from their many visits to Porthkerris, so it was lovely to have the roles reversed as this time they would be showing us around one of their favourite local dive sites, Vobster Quay. From the moment we arriv

Day 3: Wraysbury Dive Centre
4th November The drive from our campsite at Henfold Lakes in Surrey to Wraysbury Dive Centre in Berkshire took around 40 minutes along the M25. As we approached the dive centre, the roads became narrower, but after the experiences of Sunday, today felt far more manageable with no heart-stopping moments this time! On arrival, we were warmly greeted by Yvonne, who showed us where to park. We were chuffed to discover that we’d been given the best spot in the car park, slightly t

Day 2: Surrey to Central London
3rd November Today was all about changing pace and stepping outside our comfort zone. After the calm of the Cornish coast, we swapped countryside tranquillity for the energy of the city. Sophie had been nominated in two categories at The British Photography Awards, so we caught a train into Central London to attend the ceremony at The Royal Lancaster Hotel. The hustle and bustle of the capital felt worlds away from the peace, open spaces, and fresh air of Cornwall but It was

Day 1: Cornwall to Surrey
2nd November And we’re off! The Great Scuba Drive officially began at 9am on the 2nd of November. With good luck wishes ringing in our ears and more hugs than we could count, we set off from Porthkerris, winding our way through the narrow Cornish lanes to begin our journey from Cornwall to Scotland. Excitement bubbled over, mixed with just a touch of apprehension as this was the start of something that we had been planning for months. Our first stop was a beautiful campsite n

A Summer at Porthkerris
When I was about to start my professional placement year for my BA in Marine and Natural History Photography at Falmouth University, I knew I wanted to dive, literally, into the marine world. I’d seen an advert on Instagram about Dive Master internships at Porthkerris Divers in Cornwall, and it immediately caught my attention. After chatting with the university dive team, who encouraged me to go for it, I reached out to the Porthkerris crew. They invited me to visit, and from

Blue Sharks at Porthkerris
Dancing with Blue Sharks off Cornwall It was still dark when the alarm went off at half past five. Coffee, breakfast, and camera kit all came together in the half-light before dawn. By six, we were meeting on the beach, bleary-eyed but buzzing with anticipation. The plan: a full day out on the Celtic Cat, heading ten miles off Lizard Point in search of blue sharks. Casting Off into the Blue Before we even set foot on the boat, there was work to be done. Bait buckets were haul
